MANUFACTURING OF KUOMA SHOES
We believe in producing hardwearing and high-quality products. We are a responsible company and use recycled materials whenever possible for making our shoes. We buy our materials from responsible companies operating in Europe. We have minimised the amount of waste produced in our process and all waste that is produced, is burned for energy in an incinerator. We value our workers and their expertise, and we work in safe conditions.
Our products are continuously developed, and we take customer feedback into consideration in our development work.
All Kuoma shoes are made in our Kuomiokoski facilities. All in all, our boots take 75 different manufacturing steps to make. On this page you can read about how our shoes are made, from design to packaging. Don’t worry, we will not describe all 75 steps in detail, but you will still get a comprehensive peek into the expertise and amount of work that goes into every Kuoma shoe.
All Kuoma shoes begin their journey on a designer’s desk. Our highly creative designers draw up the models and make the patterns for our shoes, as well as design a suitable look and colour for the shoe.
The upper material in all our shoes, as well as the work needed in cutting, it is provided by our Finnish subcontractors. The same goes for weaving our fabrics and dyeing them.
The different parts of a shoe are sewn together. This includes sewing the parts of the upper together, all decorations, the feather edge, as well as the Kuoma labels. Once the upper is sewn, the midsole is attached. The PU foam will be attached to the midsole.
Some of our shoes also have a heel counter for extra support: this is first heated and then sculpted while the material is still warm.
After the midsole is sewn in place, the shoe is transferred to outsole production. First, a last is placed inside the shoe to make sure it keeps its form. After this, the shoe (and the last) are attached to a polyurethane injector which will give the shoe its PU outsole.
After the shoe has an outsole, it is finished: the extra PU foam around the shoe’s edges is cut off, the shoe is vacuumed to remove dust, its quality is checked, the insoles are placed inside it, and hangtags and stickers are put in place.
The finished shoe is packed in a box and then transported from Kuomiokoski to the logistics centre in Mäntyharju. In Mäntyharju it will be placed in storage until it will be packed according to our customer’s wishes and sent off.
REACHING OUR CUSTOMER
After a shoe is packaged as requested, it is ready to be sent out. It will be delivered to one of our retailers, who will then sell the shoe to a customer. And that’s the story of how your Kuoma shoes reach you.
